Barcelona is more than the Capital of Cataluna, one of Spain's richest regions, and the eternal competitor of Madrid. It is an economical and cultural hub, and probably one of the most dynamic cities in Europe. You will feel a very strong defense of the Catalan roots in the city, yet, it is turned to Europe and modernity.
Located between hills and the Mediterranean sea, Barcelona offers beautiful landscapes and viewing spots. It also have a mix of three totally different architecture styles, which are all amazing in their own kind.
First, and probably what struck me the most, is the modernist architecture, with Gaudi masterpieces like the Sagrada Familia and Parc Guel.
It also has one of the biggest and best preserved Gothic quarter in Europe, with in the Middle the cities Cathedral.
And finally, all the other specificities such as Eixample quarter, a model of 19th century architecture, Monjuic Hill, and La Rambla taking you to the modern olympic city and beaches.
You will discover in Barcelona amazing and eclectic monuments and neighborhoods, a very dynamic city, and all this on the Mediterranean shores. It is definitely a city that will mark you;
Of course, as in highly touristic places, Barcelona has a lot of Pick Pocketing especially around the Rambla. Be careful on your belongings, and be aware that the Rambla has two very different sides, one being relatively unsafe and dirty (the right part when looking towards the sea.
