The Bicazului Gorges is a reservation territory located in the Eastern Carpathian Chain of Romania between Neamţ and Harghita counties. Due to the natural landscape, it is one of those places that you should really visit when you are in Romania.

The most important feature of this park is the Bicaz Gorges, which is the passageway between Transylvania and Moldavia. This serpentine like passage can be a little dangerous, but for the beautiful view it is worth assuming a risk.
In this region there are some wonderful caves to see, like the Black Cave and the Waterfall Cave.

I advise you to to make a round trip when you go to the Bicazului Gorges, as I know from experience that you won't have much to do there beside admiring this wonder of the nature. If you plan a round trip you can visit several other places which are near the Bicazului Gorges.

One of these places is the largest natural mountain lake in Romania, the Red Lake. Its name comes from the alluvia, iron oxides and iron hydroxides which have a reddish color. The lake really seems dark and threatening, but it gets friendly once you take the boat (there is a counter where you can rent boats). Its friendliness is perhaps due to the fact that once you start to row you will observe flocks of ducks flying around you. You will be amazed by the very rich flora and fauna of the place.

Once you go further you can stop also by the Izvorul Muntelui Barrier Lake. With its 35 km it is the longest artificial lake from Romania. The easiest way of access to the lake is by car, on the 12 C national road from Gheorgheni or the Brasov-Deda road. However, you can get there by train as well. In this case you should take the train to the town called Bicaz and from there the bus to the Red Lake. As far as I remember there are 2 buses daily. The place from where the buses depart is not far from the train station, but if you can't find it just ask around, you will surely find someone to help you.

Whatever you choose, the car or the train and the bus, the Bicazului Gorges and its surroundings are definitely worth visiting.
