The Cité de l'Automobile is originally made of the Schlumpf brothers' collection, rich industrials who made their fortune in the textile industry. It is considered to be today the most important collection of historic cars, and definitly the most important Bugatti cars collection, including two out of the six ever built Bugatti Royale and the Coupé Napoléon.

The Schlumpf brothers started their collection just after WW2, and were agressivly tracking all the existing Bugattis, as well as the most famous cars from 1878 to the recent years.
