Haarlem

One thing you have to know about Haarlem is that is's very populated, due also to the fact that during the Dutch Golden Age it was one of the most important Dutch cities. Many of the central buildings in Haarlem are intact and included in the Dutch Heritage register, therefore worth visiting.

Even though Amsterdam is the most well-known city for its museums and attractions, the history of Haarlem goes even deeper. You will find here the Teylers Museum, one of the oldest museums of the Netherlands with a unique collection of artifacts that will definitely amaze you. Another museum you can visit is the Frans Hals Museum, de Hallen, a modern art museum with two historic halls, one called the Vleeshal, the only place where it was allowed to sell meat during the Renaissance and the Verweyhal, which was the fishmarket.

If you want to see some religious sights there are churches you can visit, the most well-known is de Grote Kerk van San Bravo. I don't enjoy visiting churches, but I have a look on the architecture, I absolutely love the Gothic style.

The main square is the part of the city that you don't want to miss! It is vibrant and full of life. The best shops, cafés and restaurants are here.

You can reach Haarlem either by train, bus or bike. I used the train as Haarlem has great connection with Amsterdam. From Amsterdam Central Station I was in Haarlem in 15 minutes. With the bus it is more difficult to get around and it also lasts longer, around 45 minutes. There are several buses which leave from Amsterdam Schiphol but you will have to pay with an OV chipcard. Another alternative is to rent a bike and ride it to Haarlem. From the center of the Netherlands it takes an hour to get there. Once you're there enjoy the city and have a good beer!!Less
