Kyoto was the historic Capital of Japan before Tokyo, and occupied the major role in Japanese history; In addition, it was one of the rare major Japanese cities which was spared by bombardments during WWII, and escaped by little from total destruction by a nuclear bomb, as it was considered as a cultural target by the US command.
Consequently, Kyoto holds the biggest number of Japan's historic monuments, 20% of Japan's National Treasures and holds 17 locations included in UNESCO's World Heritage.
It is therefore useless to say that visiting Japan without going to Kyoto is a major touristic crime!
Kyoto contains roughly 2,000 temples and shrines, the Emperors and Shoguns major Palaces, amazing gardens and of course a fantastic old town.
If you want to have a sense of Japanese culture, Kyoto is definitely the best place.
Besides the beauty of the monuments, I completely fell in love with the relaxing spirit of this city. What a fantastic experience to walk, sit and contemplate these unbelievable gardens, so well designed and maintained. The zen garden was for me a revelation.
I would also strongly advice to lodge in the small houses/motels in the old town, where you'll meet many Geishas and Japanese in their traditional outfit, wake up with fantastic small gardens in the courtyard.
I had the great opportunity to visitt the city with a Japanese friend from Kyoto, and it made the visit awesome. I will sure go back there again!
Kyoto receives every year over 30 million tourists, and believe me, I was glad to be one of them!Less
