Lake Balaton

There are many who have visited the Lake Balaton or at least heard of it. As Hungary hasn't got any seas it is often said that Lake Balaton is the Hungarian sea. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations of Hungary and for all the right reasons.
Last year I was on vacation in Hungary one of my friends said that I can't leave without visiting one of the treasures of the country. When they've said that it is the largest lake in Europe it was a very good argument and they've managed to talk me into it. Some of our acquaintances had lend us some bikes, so I've accepted the challenge of riding towards Lake Balaton. I've rode really huge distances during my stay in the Netherlands, so what physical effort is concerned this was not going to be hard. I didn't expect to have any cycling paths (which in the Netherlands is so well-organized), but still having to ride with cars constantly passing beside you does add an amount of difficulty to it.

I can't say that it was the most pleasant ride of my life, but it was all compensated by the view, the fresh air of Lake Balaton. We've walked around the place. The water of the lake is considered a natural remedy against fatigue and anemia.

Siófok is the nearest to the lake. The Water Management Museum will give you an insight into the history of the lake, especially the shipping and fishing characteristic to the region.

If you are hungry you can eat at one of the local restaurants (you will find many!). This is the best way to get a taste of the country's cuisine. If you haven't had already any Hungarian dishes, it will be an even more amazing experience.
One hint I could give to those who love architecture is to visit the church. Unfortunately it was still on renovation when I visited, hope that some day I will have the chance to return and see it again.
