Mons

Mons is a Wallon city, that is to say it is situated in the French speaking part of the country. Thanks to its culture and the many activities organized here it was selected to be the European capital of culture in 2015. This town, situated at 1 h ride from Brussels was called by Victor Hugo a very strange town.

Mons is rich in architectural styles and you will certainly be charmed by the little, narrow streets, the brick houses and of course all the fortifications. The Gothic style Townhall was built between 1458 and 1477. Make sure that you don't forget the Van Gogh house, where Van Gogh lived for a little time, which not only is well-preserved, but houses a permanent exhibition as well.

As in the case of all Belgian towns, the best way to visit them is by foot or by bicycle! Otherwise you will miss all the important shops, cafés, monuments, libraries or other interesting places that you can discover on the way!Less
