If you visit Rotterdam you will be amazed at how different it can be from the rest of the Netherlands. Honestly, I didn't expect to find here such modern architecture, especially after visiting Amsterdam. With all its skyscrapers it resembled more to an American city than a Dutch one! The modern architecture is due to the fact that during the Second World War it was bombarded, so the whole town had to be rebuilt. Although it didn't quite fit into the picture I've had in mind of Dutch towns, I can say that it is absolutely worth visiting.
All Rotterdammers (and not only) know the saying :'' Money is earned in Rotterdam, distributed in The Hague and spent in Amsterdam'', which emphasizes how important the economy of Rotterdam is. Not only the economy, but also the culture of the town is continually growing (did you know that it was the European Capital of Culture in 2001?).
Rotterdam is not only the second largest town of the Netherlands, but it has one of the largest ports in the world (it was also one of the buzziest until the first place was taken over by Shanghai). If you want to have a thorough view of the port and the city you should go to the Euromast. The view from there is like no other and you can see very well the port od the city.
Actually Rotterdam looks better from above than from below.
Another sight you shouldn't miss (and you certainly can't!) is the Erasmus Bridge. This is the most impressive bridges I have ever seen! Be sure to take a picture of it!
Other sights you have to visit are the Cube Houses, the Old Harbour, the Boijmans van Beuningen museum, the zoo, the Fotomuseum. For the rest just wander on the streets, you'll find certainly something to see. Another good tip: visit the city through the Spido boat tour.
No matter which way you choose to visit it, Rotterdam will certainly offer an unforgettable experience!Less
