Saint Agnes Fort

The Saint Agnes fort was built in the 1930s as part of the Maginot defense line. It was at the bottom south of the line and Number 2 block was among the best equipped in the hole maginot line.

Saint Agnes participated in the WWII in June 1940 when the Italian Army surpringly attacked south of France; The fort defended the coastal road to Nice and a barrage shelling of over 1500 rounds. It succeeded in blocking the Italian invasion until the armistice was signed.

The fort is a real 2000 m² city under 55 meters of rocks and concrete. It is designed to be in full autonomy with air recycling, water, food and amuniation reserves to resist a 3 months siege. It was designed to work like a submarine.

The fort kept being managed by the army until 1990 which left it in an exceptional conversation state, and was eventually bought buy Saint Agnes town, who organizes guided visits.

If you like military history, you definitly need to visit this fantastic example of military engineering.

During the touristic region from June to September, the fort is openned every day from 10h30 to 12h and 15h to 19h.

The rest of the year it is openned only on WEs from 14h30 to 17h30. Guided tours are organized all year long.Less
