Sighetu Marmaţiei, known as Sighet is one of my favorite towns in Northern Transylvania. It is the historic capital of the Maramureş region. Beside historic capital Sighetu Marmaţiei is a university center as well and with each year it gains a bigger popularity among tourists.

Here are some attraction which you can visit during your stay at Sighet.

Firstly, a place that I consider worth visiting is the Museum of MaramureÅŸ. This museum has two sections. The first one is inside and holds an exposition of many objects from the past like wooden objects, documents attesting the rich rural heritage of the place and some quite scary masks. The second section of the museum is an open air museum spread on a large surface. This is situated on the outskirts of the town and organized as an authentic village of the MaramureÅŸ region. Each house represents a certain period and a certain style. Some of them even have some really weird tools used a long time ago. I adore these open air museums, they take you back in time sharing a part of history. That's why I always make time to visit them. If you love history and museums than you know what I'm talking about.

The Victims of Communism Memorial House is another place for those who love history. This building was once one of the most oppressive communist jails of Romania, where lots of intellectuals, journalists, poets and ministers were sent after 1950. They all died here either of torture or starvation. Today this place is a complex museum worth visiting.

The Ethnographic Museum of MaramureÅŸ is situated right in the center of the town in the same building where the cinema is. What can you see in the Ethnographic Museum? Mainly objects that have a connection with history, traditional costumes worn on different occasions.

My last suggestion is not a place situated in Sighetul Marmaţiei, but around 7 km from the town. I am talking about the Izei Valley. I really enjoyed taking a walk to this village, I observed that people still live in harmony with nature, there are still traditions kept and they are not in a hurry all the time and less stressed than those who live in the town. Fresh air, nature and calmness. What else do you need?

All in all, I hope that Sighetu Marmaţiei is on your list of places to see in Romania, because it is definitely worth a visit!
