The Memorial of the Victims of Communism and of the Resistance from Sighetu Marmației consists in a museum located in the old political prison from Sighet, and the International Studies about Communism Center located in Bucharest.

It is known that the Sighet Prison was built in 1897 as a prison for the common law, made by the Austro-Hungarian Administration. Then in 1950 were brought to The Sighet prison hundreds of dignitaries from around the country (former ministers, academics, economists, military historians, journalists, politicians), some of them sentenced to heavy punishment, others not even judged.

The prisoners were held in unsanitary conditions, miserably fed, stop to lie down on the beds of the cells without heating. They were not allowed to look out the window. Much later, the windows were covered with shutters. The humility and the insults were part of the extermination program.

In 1977 the prison was decommissioned and entered in a process of decay.

The Civic Academy Foundation took over the ruin of the former prison in 1995, to transform her into Memorial. The rehabilitation works of the building lasted until 2000. Because it was a century old, was ruined and full of damp, it was necessary to rebuild the foundations, the insulation, the roof, interior walls, etc.

Each cell has become a museum chamber, following a chronological order, and where you can see objects, photographs, documents from those times.

In 2000 to the old building was added a module comprising a modern conference room, which can carry today: symposiums, debates and seminars and summer school courses. The hall is equipped with simultaneous translation system and can be rented for international events.Less
