Harbin is the capital of Heilongjiang province and the 10th Chinese city in terms of population, with nearly six million inhabitants. Located in the northeast of the country, Harbin has gained the reputation of "city of ice" due to the very low temperatures recorded during the winter in January, average monthly temperature is -18.4 degrees Celsius. The lowest temperature recorded in the Chinese metropolis, was -42.6 degrees Celsius.
