The two main medieval citadels in Transylvania

The citadels here are in large number and some have earn the title of tourist attraction, receiving many visitors.

Rasnov Citadel is probably the best preserved of this kind of fortifications in Romania. The citadel was built by the Teutonic Knights as a defense for the villages around. The main attraction in the citadel is the 146 meters deep fountain built as a lack of water resources. Inside the citadel there is also an armory museum, weapons, galleries, cloth pieces and pieces that remember of the defeat in Mireslau of the Michael the Brave troops in 1600.

The Fagaras citadel / fortress was built to defend the south-east of Transylvania. Michael the Brave is the most important Transylvanian leader that lived with his family here. During the XVII century 4 meetings of the Transylvania Diet consisted of three estates: the Hungarian elite, Saxon leaders and the free Székely Hungarian took place here.
