Each and every country has its main tourist attractions, for which it is recognized and known worldwide. We have the Eiffel tour in France, the Big Ben in London, just to name a few.
But I think, that if we really want to get a grasp of the culture of a country we need to get off the beaten track, put on our tourist shoes ans start visiting not only the well-known places, but also the ones which are not that popular, but still have a lot to show us. Such an attraction is the Zaanse Schans located in the Netherlands.
If in Amsterdam you can feel that complete atmosphere of the Netherlands through the numerous canals and the bicycles that are at every step, in the Zaanse Schans you will get this feeling through the windmills, clogs and cheese, three things the Dutch just can`t live without. This place is like a breath of fresh air, it`s like going back in the history of this country, as the Zaanse Schans has a collection of well-preserved historic windmills and houses.
All those green wooden houses can make you fall in love with this stunning place. And if you`re the type of tourist who doesn`t leave a place without a souvenir, you`re in the right place, because this place is loaded with gift shops and all of them are full with touristy things, not to mention the workshops. At the clog workshop, for instance, you can see how the clogs are made, while at the cheese workshop you can see how traditional cheese is made. It can`t get more Dutch than at the Zaanse Schans!
