The basics of the local History museum from Galati were made in 1890 when the politician Vasile Alexandru Urechia took the initiative to establish the first library in the city of Galati and a museum; they were hosted in the halls of the "Vasile Alexandri" high school. A large part of the objects that have been in the first museum can be found today exposed at the Museum of History in Galati.

The history of the History Museum

23 years later by the opening of the first museum, Paul and Catherine Pasa started a new museum complex with mixed profile, which was located in one of the halls of the Boys School No. 6 from town; this time the museum contains many elements of the natural sciences and fewer with historical impact.
In 1937 he founded the Association "Cuza Voda House"; this association has managed to assemble funds, donations and contributions from authorities and bought the parents' home of Alexandru Ioan Cuza which was inaugurated as the Museum "Cuza Voda House". Today, this building is part of the History Museum Galati.
In time, the museum has suffered many changes; there have been bought or donated new building and added to the Museum Heritage. The surface on whic are exposed today many pieces, has grown from year to year because of the many demarches made in this sense and the collections were greatly enriched. For example, in 1956 the museum was divided into three branches: History Museum, The Natural Science Museum and The Art Museum, all subordinate today to the History Museum of Galati.

So the museum reached to take care of only two permanent exhibitions: the Manjina and the "Cuza Voda House". In a short time, to the museum was allocated a building, where is located today the headquarter, on the Maior Iancu Fotea nr. 2 streets. The building required major repairs that delayed the opening until 1988, year in which the thematic museum was founded on the didactic principles of general national history, the museum was well equipped, with exhibits coming from the spatial reference of the the Maritime Danube county.

In time, the museum experienced a great development, reaching today to have six sections as follows:
• The headquarters of the History Museum – Galati - Domneasca Street, No. 25. Opening hours are depending on season and depending on permanent exhibition or temprorar from here. Throughout the year it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and in winter the museum closes with an hour earlier, at 17.00.

"Cuza Voda House" - Cuza Voda Street no. 80. The museum is arranged in Cuza Voda's parents' house and can be visited throughout the year (Monday and Tuesday closed). Note that in 2003 was refurbished an annex where it you can visit an exhibition of numismatic collections, documents, medals and contemporary pieces.

The building is where Costache Negri, Nicolae Balcescu, Kogalniceanu, Alecsandri and Alexandru Ioan Cuza met to discuss the program of ideas of the revolution forty-eighters. The house was declared a historical monument in 1943, and 25 years later, in 1968 became the home of Memorial Costache Negri.
